California Rare Fruit Growers Fullerton Arboretum Plant Collection Specimens in the Rare fruit Grove History

Shortly after the Fullerton Arboretum held its grand opening to the public, founding fathers of the California Rare Fruit Growers, Inc. announced that their organization had grown too large for them to operate alone, and they were retiring and offering the management to the members. Naturally the new president was in search of a stabilizing headquarters, and the Arboretum was also interested in having them locate in Fullerton. The Carnivorous Plant Society was already headquartered there by this.time. It has turned out over the years that this has been a mutually beneficial arrangement.

At about this same time, the newly elected president of the CRFG, Inc. resided in La Habra Heights nearby, and through his leadership the Orange County Chapter of CRFG was organized.

On the undeveloped grounds of the Arboretum was an area where a few "rare" fruit trees had been planted by the owners of the land before it was made a part of the California State University and, subsequently, the Arboretum. An agreement was made that the area could be designed and planted by the new organization affiliated with the Arboretum - the Orange County Chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers. Under the leadership of Cal Bream, Clarence Barker, Rudy Haluza, Judge Raymond Vincent, Perry Daniels, Denzel Kearney.and others in the chapter, trees donated by these members were planted, the first of many trees to be planted here. The first of three drip irrigation systems was installed.

A gazebo was designed and constructed by CRFG members with the approval of the Heritage House Committee and the Arboretum Commission. The Arboretum does day-to-day maintenance of the grove and makes the ultimate decisions. Orange County Chapter members, specifically CRFG Arboretum Advisor Alfredo Chiri, do continual procurement of unusual trees. .

The term "rare fruit" is used to denote fruits which are not normally grown in this geographical area. The CRFG is essentially extending the range of the plants by bringing the tropical plants into a subtropical area or bringing the plants from a temperate zone into the subtropical area.
